newpollution design lab is the work of Jonny Norridge.
For two and a half decades, this has been the focal point of my design practice, with projects incorporating: graphic design, motion graphics, generative design, interaction & art direction.
Design Matters
I love engaging in the design process — working through the early stages of conceptual thinking, problem solving and exploring visual language that communicates with meaning and style, surprise and delight. I value exploration of technique and concepts, strong craftsmanship and a healthy dose of playfulness.
Teaching & Speaking
Along side my design practice I’m an Associate Lecturer at Nottingham Trent University, primarily teaching on the Graphic Design and Motion Graphics degree courses. I love mentoring and coaching students through the design process through running tutorials and workshops. All my experience in the design world comes into play we work through projects encompassing typography, image making, branding, motion graphics, coding and interactive media.
A bit of back story — newpollution.co.uk was set up in 1999 as an experimental art and design space for me to explore the intersections of interaction, motion graphics, generative design, and visual communication.
In 2001 newpollution became the working title for my design studio with the premise that design is a verb. The design process works best when there are spaces for consultation, research, exploration, creativity, conversation and refinement.
What’s with the name? The story behind how this design practice ended up with the name newpollution is long and mostly unnecessary. For the curious, the story includes: a Beck song (1996), and student radio show (1996-98) and an experimental web-space (1999-2001).
